10 Infamous Shoot Moments When WWE Got Real
4. Curtain Call
Here we have an entry that the world was never intended to see. Thanks to the
wonders of fan cam footage though, the events of the Madison Square Garden
house show on May 19th, 1996 were captured for all to see.
The show’s card included a heel Triple H vs. a face Razor Ramon, plus a main event putting a heel Diesel against face Shawn Michaels in a steel cage match. So it was very strange when at the end of the night, Razor Ramon and Triple H came out and hugged both Michaels and Diesel, totally desecrating kayfabe in the process.
Vince McMahon had allowed this to happen as this was one of Razor and Diesel’s final nights in the WWE, having recently signed contracts with WCW. He hadn’t realised it would escalate as it did, with the traction it gained seeing it cited as a moment that the inner workings of the business were well and truly exposed to the wider wrestling audience.
Despite its controversy, the moment has since been rehashed by the likes of Bullet Club in ROH, as well as Bayley, Finn Bálor, and American Alpha in NXT ahead of the 2016 Draft. But never has it been quite as real as that 1996 MSG house show.
