10 Issues WWE Needs To Address In 2022
9. 50/50 Booking & Clean Finishes
Of all the myriad problems affecting WWE, the in-ring action itself tends not to be among them. For all the creative and corporate issues, the roster boasts a bevvy of incredibly talented workers who can be relied upon to tell a story. That is until the match reaches its conclusion.
On TV especially, clean finishes are a rare commodity indeed. Out of fear of weakening a performer, or simply making a storytelling decision, a ludicrous number of matches ends with a flukey pin courtesy of a surprise roll-up or a distraction. And that’s if we get to see a fall at all - plenty more bouts are simply thrown out by way of DQ.
And if we do get a finish, more often than not WWE will pull the old switcheroo the next week and give the loser a win to keep everything on level pegging. The likes of Karrion Kross have been crippled from the off by his 50/50 booking with Jeff Hardy and Keith Lee, with no one coming out of it looking good.
The non-finish is a useful tool in a booker’s arsenal, but when it’s used so flagrantly it sets fans up to expect anything other than a decent, meaningful ending. It doesn’t protect anyone, just puts the whole roster on the same level of mediocrity.
