10 Lamest Swerves In WWE History

You can’t talk about botched WWE swerves without bringing the Higher Power up. It’s one of the Attitude Era’s most infamous storylines, and of all the outrageously overbooked nonsense that WWE produced at the time, this angle still stands out.

The Undertaker’s Ministry of Darkness spent 1999’s early months trying to usurp Vince McMahon’s control of WWE. They targeted his daughter, Stephanie, and eventually kidnapped her at Backlash. 'Taker then attempted to marry into the McMahon family through a “Black Wedding", but was eventually stopped by Steve Austin.

This made Stone Cold an apparent hero in the eyes of Vince, his longtime enemy, while Shane expelled his father from the Corporation. The newly-merged Corporate Ministry was formed soon afterwards, with Shane revealing that this was his plan all along. He was secretly in cahoots with The Undertaker, and that the whole thing was an elaborate scheme so that he could seize power for himself.

There was another force at work, however. Undertaker revealed that his actions were guided by a “Higher Power", whose end goal was to destroy Steve Austin. Then, in one of the most nonsensical swerves in WWE history, the Higher Power threw his burgundy hood back, and announced “it was me, Austin! It was me all along!”

It was a total waste, and an insult to the fans’ intelligence. The Higher Power could have been used to build WWE’s next big heel, but fans were instead expected to accept that Vince had orchestrated his own daughter’s kidnap just to stick it to Stone Cold. “Contrived” doesn’t even cover it.
