It’s almost cliché to laugh at the Gobbledy Gooker these days, but the character deserves its status as one of the worst wrestling gimmicks of all-time.

WWE wanted to come up with a unique marketing strategy for Survivor Series 1990, so they started carrying a giant egg around their biggest shows. The company promised that the egg would hatch at the pay-per-view, and as daft as the whole thing sounds, there was a huge level of anticipation around it.

WWE had put a great deal of time and effort into building the egg up as something major, and whatever burst from it at Survivor Series was set up to have a huge impact on the company. That moment finally came on Thanksgiving, when the Gobbledy Gooker was born.

In hindsight, other than a man in a turkey costume, what else could possibly have hatched from an egg on a Thanksgiving wrestling show? Regardless, the Gooker was an immediate flop, and as he danced with Gene Okerlund live on pay-per-view, it was clear WWE had made a huge, huge mistake. Gorilla Monsoon and Roddy Piper tried to put the turkey over on commentary, but it was no use, and the gimmick was scrapped after just a single show. As far as horrendous unveilings go, it’s still tough to beat the Gooker.
