Savio Vega was always a solid hand for the WWF, but unless you’re Puerto Rican he probably wasn’t your favourite wrestler.

Signing for the company in 1993, he started life as Kwang the Ninja before forming an alliance with Razor Ramon in 1995 and drifting around the midcard thereafter. He played a role in the Gang Wars storyline from 1997 to 1998, but Vega had very much become a non-factor by this point, and wasn’t even close to rivalling the WWF’s biggest stars.

Regardless, WWE decided to throw him into a major role at No Way Out ‘98. The PPV was originally set to be headlined by Cactus Jack, Steve Austin, Terry Funk, and Owen Hart facing a D-Generation X team of WWF Champion Shawn Michaels, Triple H, and the New Age Outlaws. Unfortunately, HBK suffered a severe back injury one month prior to the match. He was pulled from the event as a result.

The WWF replaced him with a mystery opponent, billing him as a ghost from Stone Cold’s past coming back to haunt him. That man turned out to be Savio Vega, and after major hype going into the event, the reveal came off predictably poorly.

Austin’s team scored the victory in the main event, but this was the Attitude Era equivalent of someone like Curt Hawkins substituting for John Cena in 2017.
