It’s not enough that WrestleMania IX was simply a bad WrestleMania. There’s been plenty of those. The way it ended, however, was pretty much a thumb in the eye to… everyone, really. The fans, the critics, and most importantly, the WWE Champion: Bret 'Hitman' Hart.

Bret had been champion for about six months heading into the show. Landing in Las Vegas, he expected to defeat Yokozuna and retain the title. However, plans changed, and Vince McMahon informed Bret that he would be dropping the belt to the Samoan giant.

Then, along came Hulk Hogan, who suggested that immediately after Yoko got his big win, he would swoop in, defeat him, and close out WrestleMania as a five-time WWE Champion. Vince, wanting to recharge his stagnating business, acquiesced to Hogan. He and Hulk convinced Bret to go along with the plan on the pretense that Hogan would return the favor at SummerSlam and put over Bret as the new top babyface.

However, Hulk Hogan is Hulk Hogan, and that of course never came to pass. He simply dropped the belt to Yokozuna at the following PPV, and left WWE for nine years. That effectively made the title change at WrestleMania IX completely pointless.

Someone should convince Roman Reigns to put up Hulk Hogan’s hand and say “You’re the real w*nk pheasant now, Hulk.”
