10 Lamest WWE Title Changes
2. John Cena To Sheamus (TLC 2009)
The table match is probably the worst gimmick in WWE that’s still semi-regularly utilized. The pacing is broken up by having to set up contrived spots, and ultimately, nothing is proven, because the only thing that happened is that someone went through a table. As you can imagine, it’s an easy way for cheap title match finishes.
WWE are no stranger to having a title change hands via table. In 2016, Becky Lynch’s only reign as SmackDown Women’s Champion ended when she fell through one during her match with Alexa Bliss. Most hilariously, at Extreme Rules 2012, Cody Rhodes regained the Intercontinental Championship when The Big Show accidentally stepped on a table and broke through it. It was Show’s expression that sold everything and made it a classic moment.
But then, we have Sheamus and John Cena. While the examples I described could be somewhat forgiven as the IC and SmackDown Women’s title are midcard belts, this is the WWE Championship. This was the title that Bruno, Pedro, Backlund, Hogan, Hart, Michaels, Austin, and Cena made the most prestigious prize in professional wrestling.
Now, here it was, after a horrible year of hot-shotting and bad booking, changing hands after John Cena fell through a table like a doofus. Sheamus: state of your title wins, mate.
