CM Punk's first title reign was nothing to write home about, and that's putting it mildly.

Cashing in on Edge the in June of 2008, the Straight-Edge (heh) Superstar was doomed to a bad reign, as he was on a RAW brand that included Shawn Michaels, John Cena, Chris Jericho, and Batista. We were very much in the era of the man making the title, and not the title making the man. As such, Punk was relegated to the role of midcard champion, toiling with the likes of JBL while the real stars hogged the main event. Well by golly, it's a good thing Punk's fortunes changed, and he was never treated like that as champion again, right? Right?

Anyway, at Unforgiven 2008, Punk was set to defend his title in a 5-man Championship Scramble match. However, before he could be in the scramble to continue his reign, Randy Orton scrambled the champion's brain. He brought a punt to the front of the head so blunt, it rendered Punk dead. What do the officials do instead?

Chris Jericho seized the moment, and was placed in the match. Like a thief in the night, he won it in a snatch. Few talk about this moment, with good reason. It felt like a betrayal, outright treason.
