10 Last-Minute WWE Backlash 2017 Rumours You Need To Know
8. Styles And Owens Close The Show
Despite the fact that AJ Styles has been WWE's most valuable player over the past year-plus, he's spent the last month as the number one contender to the United States Championship. That means that he's going to take on Kevin Owens at Backlash, resulting in what could easily be the best match on the entire show.
Given that Owens-Styles is a bona fide slam dunk and that the Jinder Mahal-Randy Orton main event is far more of an unknown commodity, it would make sense for the U.S. Title match to close the show. That way, it would be guaranteed that the card wraps up with a bout that fans care about and that showcases the kind of athleticism that wrestling is all about in 2017.
It wouldn't be a bad idea, but it's unlikely that the company would undermine Orton, Mahal, and the WWE Championship by letting the U.S. Title headline the show. Like it or not, AJ Styles will be in the midcard while Randy Orton has yet another boring main event.
