Ric Flair arrived in WWE during the Summer of 1991 and immediately made it clear that he was coming for Hogan.

A Hogan/Flair main event was all but guaranteed for WrestleMania VIII, but before that were to (not) happen, Flair needed an opponent to get him through those Autumn months, a prelude to his major program with The Hulkster.

Insert Roddy Piper, a real-life friend of Flair's, and a popular babyface that was semi-retired in 1991. Piper had made the move to the announce table and spent less and less time in the ring. That is, until Flair showed up.

Even before Flair showed up on WWE TV, Piper challenged the Real World's Champion by spitting on the big gold belt that was being carried by Bobby Heenan.

The 1991 Survivor Series saw each man captain their respective teams, but the match ended with a massive disqualification of 5 men, and Ric Flair stood victorious.

The two would meet again in the middle of the 1992 Royal Rumble match, but once again, nothing was settled between the Hot Rod and The Nature Boy.

Piper and Flair did work the house show circuit in '91 and had one or two minor televised matches, with Flair often earning a tainted victory, but Piper never truly settled the score with Flair on WWE TV before both would move on to different opponents, stealing the show at WrestleMania VIII.
