Well, you know that thing about being heels? DX couldn't possibly stay that way very long. Telling people to "Suck It" in 1998 wasn't a recipe for boos. Upon turning face, DX (Triple H, X-Pac, Chyna, & The New Age Outlaws) found themselves battling the new Nation, (The Rock, D-Lo, The Godfather, Mark Henry, and Owen Hart.)

At the center of that conflict was once again Triple H and The Rock. With Hunter holding the European title, and Rock carrying the IC title, 1998 was heaven for WWE's midcard. Eventually, Triple H dropped that title to D-Lo, who himself went on to define that title for the next year. With the lower belt being out of the picture, their series of matches throughout the King Of The Ring qualifiers, and Fully Loaded failed to produce a definitive winner.

Throughout this time, both men were cresting as entertainers. This may sound strange to people not watching then, but HHH was beloved at a level just under Austin back then. Conversely, The Rock was so entertaining as a heel, we as fans were begging to cheer him.

Subsequently with the feud set to climax, Triple H and The Rock walked into Madison Square Garden and had one of the most physically demanding ladder matches of all time, for the Intercontinental Championship. The Rock dropped the championship to Triple H, ending their feud, and turned face not too long after, while Triple H was forced out of action due to his own knee injury.
