WWE were heavily criticised for putting Eddie Guerrero's death front and centre of Rey Mysterio's quest to win the World Heavyweight Championship in 2006, and leaving any accusations of bad taste aside, it really didn't help Rey - by any measure, a star in his own right - establish himself in the main event scene.

Throw in a contrarian Illinois crowd (and the somewhat low-key vibe that comes with the decision to place the Rumble winner's match in the middle of the card instead of the tail end), and this moment probably didn't come off exactly the way the company had envisaged (hence it's only number 9 on our list).

A pint-sized high-flyer capturing wrestling's biggest prize is still one of the all-time WWE underdog stories, though (not that they've let us forget it), and while fans were divided on whether Rey was a realistic World champion, nobody could ever deny that he was a deserving one, who earned every ounce of success that came his way.
