10 Live Observations From EVOLVE 61
9. The EVOLVE Title Picture Is Confusing
At WWN's Mercury Rising show in Dallas, Timothy Thatcher was confronted by Catch Point. Stable leader Drew Gulak criticized Thatcher, calling him a sham of a champion (Thatcher cheated to retain his title over Catch Point member Matt Riddle in their first bout, and retained the belt on a stoppage in their second when Riddle hurt him). Thatcher responded by agreeing and sullenly dropping the title on the ground. Gulak picked it up.
EVOLVE's newsletter later clarified that despite laying down the physical belt, Thatcher was still the champion, and that he was being given a mandatory vacation until June. Nevertheless, the storyline was clear - Thatcher had to prove himself to Catch Point.
At EVOLVE 61, it was Matt Riddle who was carrying the title belt. After his match with Lio Rush, though, Stokely Hathaway - who manages Catch Point's TJP but not the rest of the stable - took the belt with him. Later on, Hathaway made an appearance with the belt, but Gulak came out and took it.
Is there dissension in Catch Point? Against whom does Thatcher need to prove himself? And what about the fact that a non-Catch Point wrestler earned a title shot later in the show? Hopefully when Thatcher gets back, we'll get some answers.
