10 Longest Reigning WCW Television Champions
The WCW TV Title unfortunately doesn't get much posthumous love, but who held the strap for the longest?
It is a title that rarely comes up in conversation in the modern day, not even getting a 'History of' type piece on WWE.com, but the World Television Title played a vital role in WCW from its inception in 1974 all the way to its unceremonious end in 2000. Initially the NWA Mid-Atlantic Television Championship, it underwent a number of changes before becoming the WCW World Television Championship in 1991. When I began watching WCW Nitro in the late 1990s, the title always seemed to be around the waist of either Steve Regal or a chump like Prince Iaukea. A look at the history of the championship paints a different story however, which some of the most illustrious names in the history of the sport holding the strap at various times. Men like Ric Flair, Ricky Steamboat, Steve Austin and Sting have all brought prestige to the belt, and for a long while the belt was synonymous with long reigns. When the final change happened in 1991 this lessened off a bit, but a lot of that has to do with the changing nature of the wrestling business, increasing television tapings and more exposure in general. Looking specifically at this final incarnation from 1991 until Scott Hall threw it in the bin in 1999, these are 10 longest reigning WCW Television Champions of all-time. (In the interest of variety, a wrestler's longest reign is the only one that counts towards the list. The numbers included in brackets are reigns an individual had that lasted longer than those before them in the list. I hope this is clear).
