The longest reigning European Champion also happens to be the very first one, and one of only two Europeans to hold the belt. I'm talking of course about 'The British Bulldog' Davey Boy Smith.

He won the title by beating Owen Hart in the final of a tournament, even though Davey and Owen were tag team champions at the time. The tournament was actually very hotly contested, and to get to the final Davey had to beat Mankind and Vader, with Bret Hart, The Rock and Triple H also losing out along the way to various opponents.

Davey's long, seven month reign with the belt would come to an end at the hands of Shawn Michaels in the beautiful city of Birmingham, on September 20th 1997. His reign lasted 206 days.

There you have it, the longest reigning European Champions of all time. Would you like to see the title return? Whose run do you remember the most? Any memorable moments? Leave comments in the comment box below, and let's get to reminiscing.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
