10 Major Problems WWE Faces After SummerSlam 2017
6. Shane McMahon Overshadowing Talent
It’s a typical problem with promoter’s children, especially those of McMahon ilk. They tend to overshadow the talent in terms of booking: Stephanie is notorious for belittling the full-time roster, only to get her comeuppance in a bump at WrestleMania. On the other hand, in somewhat worse fashion, Shane actually competes against the talent, and is made to seem equal to their skill level. In storyline, it makes no sense that 46-year-old, never properly trained Shane O’Mac could pose a challenge to Undertaker or AJ Styles. Yet, there he was holding his own against these two former world champions at consecutive WrestleManias.
Now his “Super Shane” antics are spilling over into SummerSlam, where he’ll be refereeing the Owens vs. Styles match for the U.S. Championship. On the surface, his inclusion in the match seems innocent, but to the trained eye, it’s foreshadowing his return to the ring. Whether he screws Styles and surprisingly turns heel, or more likely makes a call that prevents Owens from winning the gold, the SmackDown Commissioner is set to once again steal the spotlight from his more talented and more deserving performers.
