10 Massive Exaggerations In WWE
6. ‘Greatest’
WWE isn’t shy on promoting itself and its events with bombastic and extravagant labels like ‘The Grandest Stage of them All’, ‘The Showcase of the Immortals’, ‘The Show of Shows’ and ‘The Greatest Spectacle in Sports Entertainment’.
WWE’s usage of ‘Greatest’ in its labels and taglines is a well-known embellishment for the company. Most notably on 27 April 2018 in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, when they ran the pay-per-view and Network special ‘Greatest Royal Rumble’. Whilst it was the largest Royal Rumble/Battle Royal WWE put on, it was certainly not the greatest critically. ’93, 2001 and 2007 Rumble it was not. It certainly bastardised the Royal Rumble gimmick though.
WWE recycled the ‘Greatest’ stamp earlier this year when it remarkably touted Randy Orton vs. Edge in promotion as ‘The Greatest Wrestling Match Ever’. It was puzzling they used this slogan for a match yet to take place, given match opinions are overall subjective. What's more, Edge was coming off a nine year hiatus and had only had two matches since returning at that point (that weren’t really matches). It set an unrealistic, foolish expectation. Thankfully Edge and Orton worked excessively hard to pull off a 45 minute belter. It wasn’t the greatest but it was one of them, despite WWE hindering them with that unrealistic label.
