10 Matches For The Ultimate NJPW Vs. AEW Supercard

3. Cody Vs. KENTA

A much-needed change of pace and atmosphere, the ‘Cody match’ has proved to be a multiple-level triumph on AEW cards thus far. The old-school pacing works both in itself—because Cody is almost as good a pure ‘worker’ as the men he draws inspiration from—and as respite from the full-on pace that defines the modern style.

Cody is beloved to that crowd—as loathed as KENTA is through his despicable heel work and his own antagonistic pacing. The dynamic offers a great character contrast, but crucially, an harmonious wavelength.

KENTA struggled in his G1 clash with Will Ospreay. The match suffered (only slightly, but enough) because KENTA could not keep up with him. Conversely, KENTA also worked too slowly at times in an attempt to find his own rhythm.

Cody is the perfect opponent for an act that excels through total d*ckhead psychology when he settles into it. Able to extract a thunderous audience reaction from the the least showy moves, through his timing, selling, and fire, the sight of KENTA “landing” those tame, toying kicks—after his lethal, disgusting kicks—would inspire Cody and his fans alike.

The fire-up would blow the roof off.
