10 Matches That Defined Sting’s Career

1. Sting vs. Ric Flair (Clash Of The Champions I)

n the match that made Sting a star in the wrestling industry, Ric Flair showed everyone why he was the man and could get a four star match out of anyone. This was Sting€™s first shot at Flair€™s NWA world title with a 45 minute time limit and a panel of judges which included luminaries such as Eddie Haskell and Jason Hervey from the Wonder Years (don€™t ask). JJ Dillon was locked in a cage at ringside and the stage seemed set for Sting to get his big moment and finally defeat Flair for the world title. Once the match started, it was your usual Sting-Flair bout, which means that it was fantastic and featured Flair doing what he does best. Flair fought off the young and powerful Sting while targeting the knee and slowing him down with chops. Flair was a master at working the crowd with spots and almost gave the live audience a heart attack with a few false finishes and his heel tactics. Flair looked like he was ready to finish Sting until Sting launched into his superhero comeback. Sting sent the crowd into a frenzy with his power moves but his character didn€™t know how to finish Flair for good. Sting eventually did get the Scorpion Deathlock applied but Flair held on until the time limit expired. WCW went to the judges and the bout was ruled a draw which is completely stupid given the situation but hey, that€™s WCW for you. Still, it was an instant classic that turned Sting into a main event superstar and catapulted him into the main event for the rest of his career.
