10 Matches We Must See In Lucha Underground Season 2
2. Aztec Warfare
Gimmick matches are notoriously unprotected in professional wrestling in the 21st century, but Lucha Underground has managed to avoid this by featuring showcase bouts once, adding meaning and importance to this. The centrepiece of Dario Cueto's evil genius is the Aztec Warfare match, a bout which was used to decide the very first Lucha Underground Champion. It is essentially a 20-man free-for-all, where the wrestlers enter at 90-second intervals and can be eliminated via pinfall, submission or being thrown over the top rope. Unlike other battle royals, the pacing of Aztec Warfare doesn't leave the viewer time to breathe, with the action coming fast and furious to say the very least. I'm not sure under what circumstances Aztec Warfare could return now that Catrina and Mil Muertes are in charge of the temple, but you never know what will happen in Lucha Underground. One interesting fact from the match is that Chavo Guerrero (along with Prince Puma) currently holds the record for most eliminations (four).
Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
