“I’ll do whatever you want. We’ll just take it off him. I’ll just swerve him or whatever I have to. You tell me what needs to get done…” - Shawn Michaels in Heartbreak and Triumph.

This is what Shawn claims he said to Vince McMahon in a phone conversation before Survivor Series 97. Vince felt that he had his hands tied, as Hart didn't want to lose in his home country and was on his way to WCW. The boss couldn't figure a way out of his predicament, and his other top superstar floated the idea that they essentially screw Bret.

Shawn suggested they could do a fast count, or he could “get him in a hold” and someone could ring the bell so they could wrestle the title away from Hart. Vince hesitated and called The Hitman in one last attempt to get him to change his way of thinking. That plan failed.

Vince called Shawn back and asked him if he was willing to actually do what they talked about. Shawn signed on. Vince warned him that Hart may try to fight him, so he could have Jerry Brisco teach him a few shoot moves. Shawn didn't think it would get to that point, likely because he'd confess ignorance that it was going to go down and Bret would believe him.

Perhaps Vince would have come up with the Montreal Screwjob on his own, or maybe he would have tried to find a happy medium with Bret. However, the incredibly controversial way it played out is in large part thanks to none other than WWE's greatest in-ring talent ever.

As Rust Cohle from True Detective said "Life's barely long enough to get good at one thing. So be careful what you're good at." Sadly, I can't solve a murder like Rust...or change a tire, or even tie a tie. But I do know all the lyrics to Hulk Hogan's "Real American" theme song and can easily name every Natural Born Thriller from the dying days of WCW. I was once ranked 21st in the United States in Tetris...on the Playstation 3 version...for about a week. Follow along @AndrewSoucek and check out my podcast at wrestlingwithfriends.com
