10 Modern-Era Title Reigns That Should Have Never Happened
1. Vince Russo: WCW World Heavyweight Championship
Vince Russo's run as WCW Heavyweight Champion was nothing short of a disaster.
Having a writer and authority figure book himself to win the company's most prestigious title was a bad idea from the start. As an authority figure, if you are going to insert yourself into the main event picture, it should be to help elevate a wrestler.
Vince McMahon's feud with Steve Austin is an example of a wrestler becoming a bigger star after being involved in a storyline with the person in charge of the company. Conversely, Russo tried to make himself a star at the expense of some of WCW's top performers like Booker T and Ric Flair, both of whom he defeated in televised matches. In fact, Vince Russo never lost a match in WCW and forfeited the title, as opposed to allowing someone to win it from him.
To make matters worse, the reign didn't help make Russo a top heel. Moves like this are a big part of the reason WCW ultimately lost The Monday Night Wars.
