3. The Figure-Four Leglock (Ric Flair)

The Rock Ken Shamrock
WWE

While 'The Nature Boy' is the most synonymous with this bizarre-looking hold, it was actually his predecessor, Buddy Rogers, who first brought it to the squared circle.

Using one's own legs to tie up the opponent's lower limbs like shoelaces, the figure-four ended many a match in the 20th century. Curiously, as the new millennium has rolled in, this hold's kayfabe power has rolled out. The more... distinguished Flair became, the less successful his once deadly finisher grew.

Passing it on to The Miz (a dishonourable mention given he's rarely applied it correctly) hasn't helped matters either. Regardless, it was the crown jewel of many five-star Flair wars from his '80s heyday. Perhaps best of all is the agony with which Terry Funk finally screamed "I quit" during his classic showdown with Naitch at NWA Clash of the Champions IX in '89.

The hold's suspense in the ring was bolstered by the fact that reversing it put the torturer in the painful position. Babyface stars such as Ricky Steamboat and Sting would often pop a crowd by turning themselves and Flair onto their bellies, seemingly crushing the 16-time world champ's knees in the process.

Thanks to Flair, this hold remains the stuff of legend, even if its usage has wound down in more recent years.
