By 1989, the once-great American Wrestling Association was an ailing beast. Less than two years after the airing of the match in question here, Verne Gagne's proud operation would cease to exist, ending a run that had lasted since 1960. Looking at the 'Team Challenge Series', it's not hard to see why there was a lack of sustained interest from wrestling fans.

One week on AWA All Star Wrestling, the promotion presented a 'Turkey On A Pole' Match. In terms of Thanksgiving traditions, Survivor Series this was not. In the bout, Colonel Debeers faced Jake 'The Milkman' Milliman, which is actually quite topical considering WWE parodied the character on SmackDown recently.

Worse, AWA officials instructed announcers to talk up the idea like it was one that would revolutionise pro wrestling, trying to hype the non-existent excitement of two wrestlers vying to grab the bird. Running seriously thin on ideas, the promotion was clearly on its last legs.

As hilarious as it is to poke fun at such a scenario, it's also actually quite sad to imagine that things had become quite so desperate. The writing was on the wall for Gagne and crew.
