Everything was set in place: Hunter Hearst Helmsley was preparing to win the 1996 King Of The Ring and start a mega-push that summer. Due to some very real antics involving Shawn Michaels, as well as the departing Diesel and Razor Ramon, those plans were shelved for the time-being, as Triple H was punished for his part in the infamous 'Curtain Call'.

There are varying reports of what happened backstage on 19 May 1996. The WWF had held a routine house show at Madison Square Garden, the last for both Razor and Diesel. That pair were destined to join WCW soon thereafter, but wanted to say goodbye to their friends.

Following the main event, Michaels, Razor (both babyfaces), Hunter, and Diesel (both heels) embraced in the ring. This infuriated many backstage, even though the quartet have long since claimed that Vince McMahon gave them permission.

Knowing he had to do something to quell unrest, McMahon punished Triple H. As he was WWF Champion, Michaels was largely let off. Cancelling Hunter's planned King Of The Ring win, Vince would nonetheless green light a postponed victory one year later in 1997.
