After a WrestleMania 28 loss to Sheamus in 18 seconds, Daniel Bryan unleashed vitriol on girlfriend AJ Lee, whom he had brazenly kissed before eating a Brogue Kick courtesy of the Celtic Warrior.

He blamed the petite young woman for distracting him, placing all of the blame on her before kicking her to the curb. The traumatic event caused AJ to snap, becoming emotionally unstable for the next three years of her WWE career.

And therein lies the controversy.

The storyline suggested that all women are emotionally unstable, that only they would react so wildly to heartbreak. Sure, it gave WWE the most prominent female character it had since the height of Trish Stratus, Lita and Stephanie McMahon-Helmsley, but it came at the expense of good taste.

The story was also insensitive to mental health disorders, suggesting on more than one occasion that AJ's character could possibly be bipolar.

AJ made the best of her on-screen persona, becoming one of the most successful women in WWE history, but that does not forgive the writing staff's ignorance.
