7. The Fabulous Moolah

Despite being dead for over a decade, The Fabulous Moolah surprisingly became the centre of what could have been WWE's biggest controversy of the year, were it not for the fact the company went to every possible length to outdo it (twice).

Accompanied by a glittering hagiography of Moolah's contributions not just to women's wrestling but women's sport on the whole, WWE announced in March that a female battle royal set for WrestleMania would be named in her honour.

The appellation was not well met.

As ever, WWE had grossly misjudged the intelligence of their viewers - or simply didn't care. Well-informed fans were quick to point out that Moolah was anything but the model of female empowerment the promotion would have them believe, bringing up her grim history as a virtual pimp for the female wrestlers under her charge.

A tiny quarter played advocate for Moolah, but for the most part, the indignation was unanimous. When primary sponsor Snickers joined the chorus, WWE were left with no choice but to scrub her name from the show.

Benjamin was born in 1987, and is still not dead. He variously enjoys classical music, old-school adventure games (they're not dead), and walks on the beach (albeit short - asthma, you know). He's currently trying to compile a comprehensive history of video game music, yet denies accusations that he purposefully targets niche audiences. He's often wrong about these things.
