10 Most Deserving Ways A Vacant Wrestling Title Was Won
9. Roman Reigns (Survivor Series 2015)
WWE has had some rotten luck with injuries over the past few
years, and just over a year after Cena won the vacated title, the WWE World
Heavyweight Championship was once again relinquished in light of Seth Rollins’
cruelly-timed injury.
This time around, Survivor Series was the approaching PPV, and so the company looked to recapture the magic of the 1998 instalment by staging a 16-man, 15-day tournament to crown a new World Champion.
Now, on the one hand the tournament included the likes of Stardust, Titus O’Neil ,and Tyler Breeze, who aren’t exactly your usual candidates in the world title picture. However, both the semi-finals and the finals took place on the very same night at Survivor Series 2015. That meant that in Roman Reigns’ journey to victory, he overcame both Alberto Del Rio and Dean Ambrose in a single evening to capture the unclaimed gold.
That kind of double-duty alone made this tournament slightly tougher than many that have come before it. Sure, it’s nothing on Chris Jericho at Unforgiven 2001, but as far as the modern era is concerned, Reigns’ first world title win was rather well-deserved in the grand scheme of things.
