Another entry, another multi-man tournament to report. Arriving in 1990, this was one of the front-runners to all those subsequent reincarnations that have been staged in the 26 years since.

This particular tournament was for the Intercontinental Championship, which had been vacated after the former champion, the Ultimate Warrior, had captured the WWF Championship at WrestleMania VI. Apparently he was unable to hold both belts simultaneously, and it wasn’t a particularly difficult decision to select which one to discard.

A three-week tournament ensued as a result, in which Mr Perfect overcame Jimmy Snuka, Sonny Blaze, and finally Tito Santana to capture the first of his pair of Intercontinental Championships at a WWF Superstars of Wrestling taping.

Again, Perfect’s win may not have necessitated any kind of double-duty and the matches weren’t exactly all-time classic affairs, but given that this one was essentially something of a trend-setting tournament, laying the foundations for future editions, I feel like it deserves a slight priority over other entries on the list.
