10 Most Deserving Ways A Vacant Wrestling Title Was Won
5. Razor Ramon (Raw)
Usually I’d be very reluctant to feature a Battle Royal on
this list. To me they just seem like the ultimate
panic-and-throw-everyone-in-the-mix type of match, and therefore hardly the
best way to determine the worthiest winner of a title.
In this instance though, we have a Battle Royal with a slight twist—and a refreshing one at that.
Rather than simply staging a one-off, over-the-top-rope elimination bout, this one was dragged out into a two-week deal. In order to ensure that the very best man won reduce the margin for any fluke finishes, the two remaining Battle Royal combatants would meet in one-on-one action the following week to determine the ultimate victor.
This format saw Razor Ramon and Rick Martel progress to the subsequent singles bout, after what was actually a thoroughly enjoyable Battle Royal match-up. Razor then defeated Martel the following week on Raw to become the new Intercontinental Champion.
For a neat little twist—plus the fact that the fun conclusion to the Battle Royal still holds up in 2016—this one goes down as one of the more satisfying - and indeed deserving - vacant championship victories.
