Most fans saw Daniel Bryan’s retirement coming. The beloved former WWE Champion’s injury woes weren’t going away, and with WWE doctors refusing to budge on their stance of not clearing him to compete, the end was inevitable. After a couple of injury-ravaged years, Bryan’s career was coming to a conclusion, but that didn’t make the moment any less disappointing.

On February 8th, 2016, Daniel Bryan closed Raw with one of the most emotional speeches in WWE history. Months of speculation, confusion, sadness, and shattered dreams came to a conclusion with an incredible “farewell” promo, and it was impossible not to feel for the guy as he went through the motions on live television.

Bryan spoke from the bottom of his heart, and sincerity dripped from every word. It was a premature curtain call for one of the most popular babyfaces in WWE history, and a tragic conclusion for the ultimate underdog. Millions of WWE fans attached themselves to Bryan’s struggles throughout his run, but they were no longer able to live vicariously through their hero. He was gone, and they’d have to move on.

The disappointment surrounding Bryan’s retirement was outdone only by its inherent sadness. Daniel Bryan may never wrestle again, but at least he went out with his head held high.
