10 Most Genuinely Frightening Moments In Wrestling History

8. Bryan Danielson Getting His Retina Detached

Bryan Danielson's ROH run is arguably the greatest period for an American wrestler in the history of the sport, filled with a championship reign that helped re-define an era of independent wrestling and various classic matches that stand out as some of the best that the industry has ever seen.

Danielson notoriously was willing to take extreme amounts of punishment, taking repeated blows to the head and getting hit ridiculously hard by the majority of his opponents. But he's never faced anything as brutal as his classic match against Takeshi Morishima at 2007's Manhattan Mayhem II.

Morishima is significantly bigger than Danielson, infamous for his stiff offence, and immediately bludgeons the American Dragon with his massive hands. He hits him so hard in the face that he detaches Danielson's retina, a truly grotesque sight. It remains one of the most disgusting moments in wrestling history and it adds so much emotion to the narrative of Danielson trying to defeat this brutal monster.

It is not for the faint of heart and Danielson's very lucky that his retina wasn't destroyed. Even with the knowledge that his eye is fine now, it's impossible not to get swept up in the horror.
