10 Most Gloriously Overbooked Matches In Wrestling History

5. John Cena And Randy Orton Present: 101 Ways To End A Professional Wrestling Match

Considering that their SummerSlam 2009 match was roughly the 334th meeting between John Cena and Randy Orton, perhaps you can€™t blame the WWE for trying to spice things up a bit with some creative booking. It€™s a testament to the writers that they actually came up with several interesting ways to end this potentially stale encounter. Unfortunately for everyone involved they couldn€™t decide which one to use. Everything was going pretty well in this encounter until around the 13-minute mark when champion Randy Orton draws a DQ and starts to walk out with his title. At this point, announcer Lillian Garcia reveals that due to a previously unknown pre-match stipulation, Vince McMahon is restarting the match. What€™s so very great about this is that everyone involved €“ right down to Lillian herself €“ seems like they legitimately had no idea that this was supposed to happen. The confusion would only escalate from there as an attempted walk-out by Randy Orton draws another Vince McMahon restart, followed by an incident where a second referee comes down to negate Orton€™s subsequent pinfall victory over Cena by informing the original ref that Orton€™s feet were on the ropes. Shortly thereafter, this whole affair is mercifully drawn to a close when a €œfan€ rushes in to attack the referee to stop a John Cena submission attempt. A quick RKO later and Randy Orton is still your champion. Yes, you read that right. After no less than four false finishes over the span of about 10 minutes all designed to keep Randy Orton from winning; Randy Orton wins. That may seem bizarre, but honestly at that point a logical ending would have been nothing short of a resounding disappointment.
