10 Most Iconic Masks In Wrestling History
2. Blue Demon
For the "big three" of classic lucha libre, wrestling wasn't the only passion to pursue. Like his fellow superstars, Blue Demon also had quite the film career. In these so-called "luchador films," which were spurred on by the success of El Santo's movies, Blue Demon played himself, but he would often be called upon to battle a (usually supernatural) menace, such as mummies or giant spiders.
In the ring, Blue Demon was most famous as Santo's chief rival. The two had a feud in the early 1950s that made Blue Demon a star, and continued into later years. Demon famously beat Santo for the NWA World Welterweight Championship, holding it for five years.
Blue Demon's mask became as iconic as he did, and part of the reason for that was because it was instantly recognizable. As simple as it was unique, the plain blue mask with silver embellishments around the facial features conjured up subtle demonic imagery with horns just above the eyes. It wasn't scary, but it reminded you at whom you were looking.
