10 Most Important Wrestlers In AEW’s History

5. Cody Rhodes

Given that he is now a WWE superstar once again, it may seem strange regarding Cody Rhodes as one of AEW's most important wrestlers. However, it can not be understated how valuable the 'American Nightmare' was for the company, particularly throughout its inception and first year on national television.

When Cody left WWE, there was a general opinion that he was a limited in-ring performer, but he quickly re-established himself as a member of Bullet Club in promotions such as New Japan, Ring of Honor, and the NWA, becoming a bigger star than he'd ever been.

As a member of The Elite, he founded AEW in 2019 and proceeded to have a stellar in-ring year against opponents such as Darby Allin, Chris Jericho, and Sammy Guevara. Cody's match with his brother Dustin Rhodes at the first Double or Nothing remains one of the best matches in the company's history.

2020 was arguably an even better year for the 'Roller-Code-Ster,' as he worked to get young talents such as the aforementioned Allin and MJF over, whilst also becoming the first TNT Champion. His title run was magnificent too, as he gave the likes of Eddie Kingston and Ricky Starks their start in AEW, whilst his series with the late Brodie Lee was tremendous.
