WWE have a horrendous track record when it comes to addressing sensitive issues through storylines, and Eugene stands as the perfect example of this. He was the company's attempt at portraying a mentally disabled character, and while Eugene enjoyable a sizeable push at first, WWE's portrayal of his illness was typically tone-deaf, ham-fisted, and, at times, totally offensive.

Eugene had a child's mind. His speech patterns resembled those of somebody a fraction of the performer's age, he couldn't dress himself, and was extremely dependent on others. Lovable at first, the crowd soon turned on him when they realised the complete lack of sensitivity with which he was being portrayed, but he still lasted three years on the main roster.

As a storyline hook, Eugene was introduced to WWE audiences as the nephew of Raw General Manager Eric Bischoff, who, of course, wanted nothing to do with him. He eventually put Eugene under William Regal's care, though they did feud later in 2004. The two wrestled at Taboo Tuesday under the stipulation that the loser would have his head shaved, with Eugene emerging victorious thanks to Vince McMahon's help. The outcome effectively ended their onscreen relationship, and Eric was taken off television a few months later.
