Over the course of the last two decades, the role of women in professional wrestling has evolved more so than any other element in the sport. Once subservient to their charges, they have steadily become strong characters on their own. First, Miss Elizabeth changed the role of women forever, becoming an integral part of a storyline involving the two biggest stars. Sable exploited her raw sex appeal to become one of the faces of the Attitude Era, breaking on through to the mainstream media while simultaneously holding the WWE Women's Championship. As the new Millennium arrived, though, the decision was made to focus more on women's wrestling and getting fans to accept that the female talent under contract could look good and kick ass between the ropes. It has not always been easy. There have been considerable bumps in the road along the way but now, in 2015, women's wrestling is stronger and more popular than ever thanks to a plethora of men and women who helped it along the way.
