If you believe the conspiracy theorists, that cheeky scamp Vince McMahon didn’t just send Vince Russo to destroy WCW from within, but also Scott Hall and Kevin Nash.

The New World Order became a laughing stock towards the end of their run, but their formation was instrumental in establishing WCW’s mid-90s dominance in the Monday Night Wars. Scott Hall shocked the wrestling world by appearing unannounced to “invade” a WCW broadcast in 1996, and Kevin Nash followed shortly after. The two were considered WWE cornerstones at the time, and it was soon announced that WCW had simply offered them more money than their previous employers, and they’d jumped ship.

Hulk Hogan’s heel turn followed, and the nWo were born. With the stable’s assistance, WCW became the legitimate number one company in wrestling, and WWE sunk to new lows in the ratings war. How, then, did Hall & Nash set about taking down WCW and securing its eventual demise?

By encouraging the company to give out huge, unjustifiable contracts and run WCW’s finances into the ground. Nash eventually wormed his way onto WCW’s creative team, and when he made it there, it’s alleged that Nash purposefully proposed bad ideas to derail the company’s fortunes and drag the ratings down.

Nash and Hall both returned to WWE in 2002, but given the nWo’s initial success, it’s highly unlikely that Vince was behind this. WCW dominated WWE in the ratings for 84 straight weeks, after all: would a man of McMahon’s pride really allow this to happen?
