Date: July 22nd Ron Simmons was an All-American football player for Florida State University before joining the world of wrestling, where he would make history by becoming the first black NWA/WCW World Champion, defeating Vader in 1992. When he signed with the WWF, it should have been seen as a really big deal. Then, he debuted as a "gladiator" with an egg-like helmet on his head, the name of Faarooq Asad, and had Sunny for a manager. None of it made any sense at all. Not that many were complaining about the chance to see Sunny on television even more, but Simmons possesses one of the most commanding and instantly recognizable voices in wrestling history. He didn't need someone to speak for him during promos. The gimmick never really worked for him, and it wouldn't be until he became the leader of the Nation Of Domination four months later that he would start having any sort of real success. Not the greatest decision to introduce him in this manner, but it's still something that sticks in your head. To this day, people still make "egghead" jokes about his debut.
