10 Most Notorious Eddie Guerrero Urban Legends

1. He Was Supposed To Win The World Heavyweight Championship The Night He Died

The Legend: That Eddie was booked to win the World Heavyweight Championship in a triple threat match featuring Randy Orton and Batista the night he died. Why People Believe It: Eddie Guerrero had a fairly miserable time as WWE Champion in 2004. Although he was easily one of the most talented workers in the company and could have a great match in his sleep, he wasn't prepared for the mental stresses that come with being Champion. In the face of declining ratings and PPV buy rates, Eddie cracked under the pressure. It didn't help that Smackdown lost Kurt Angle and Brock Lesnar during that period and that Eddie was saddled with midcarder JBL. WWE decided to take the belt off Guerrero in July 2004, just five months after he had won the belt. Eddie was ready to carry the responsibility of being WWE Champion in November 2005 and was the hot favourite to take the title off Batista, who had suffered a back muscle injury and required time off. On November 13th, 2005 WWE were going to hold joint Raw/Smackdown tapings and Eddie was booked to face Orton and Batista in a triple threat match for the World Heavyweight Championship. Eddie never made it to the match. In her emotional testimonial on the Eddie tribute show, Stephanie McMahon inferred that Eddie had told her that he wanted Vince to know that he was going to be Champion again. But was there actually any truth to that? Is It True: Unfortunately, no, it's not. Although it makes for a good story, it's simply not true. Randy Orton was scheduled to win the match and the World Heavyweight Championship that night. Eddie would have probably feuded with Orton in the autumn/winter and may have gotten the belt further down the line. Batista also quashed the Eddie winning rumours in his autobiography, Batista unleashed. The Animal had actually lobbied for Eddie, whom he had grown close to on Smackdown, to win the title but Eddie called him and told him that, while he appreciated it, that Orton was the guy an that Vince knew what he was doing.
