Story: When Hogan started using the "Hulk Hogan" name there were times when he was billed as "The Incredible Hulk Hogan" as well. Since Marvel Comics had "The Incredible Hulk" as a comic book and TV show, they took exception to that. WWE didn't want to stop the Hogan character while it was growing, so they signed a deal with Marvel to pay them as the owner of the Hulk name. You might have noticed some Marvel logos on your Hogan merchandise in the 1980s and 1990s. When Hogan went to WCW in 1994 they struck a similar deal with Marvel. What WCW did in 1996 when Hogan went heel in the NWO was they rebranded him as Hollywood Hogan and they didn't call him Hulk Hogan as much, so they didn't have to pay as much money to Marvel. That's smart. The whole ordeal ended apparently in 2005 when Hogan just paid Marvel for rights to the name. No idea how much he paid, but that put an end to all of those legal battles.
Why People Believe It: It might sound absurd that a company could sue or have legal issues over the name of a wrestler, but from Marvel's point of view it makes a lot of sense. Hogan buying the name from them put an end to it.
Should We Believe It: Yes. It makes sense since Marvel's "Incredible Hulk" character was prominently featured on television and they had every right to have a beef with WWE over the use of the name. It's not like WWE thought of the "Hulk" name first.
