1. The Boyhood Dream Comes True - WrestleMania XII

When Shawn Michaels held his first WWF Heavyweight Title aloft, at the close of WrestleMania XII's tedious Iron Man main event, it marked the apparently emotional climax of his naff "Boyhood Dream" character arc.

There were multiple problems fraying the narrative thread. Michaels was a notorious backstage agitator, entirely removed from the plucky hero he was presented as on WWF television. He was an avatar for the common man, only he sneered at the men he was meant to inspire. That was permissible; Michaels was playing a character on television. It's not as if the children he was marketed towards had Wrestling Observer subscriptions.

That said, the thin veneer masking the real man within was effectively shattered when Michaels, seconds after he defeated Hart with the match-winning Superkick, relayed a message to Earl Hebner in full view of the camera. "Tell him to get the f*ck outta the ring," is what Shawn said. You can't hear the words, but you can read his lips. It was at once spiteful and senseless. Hart had just sold a finisher, back when that meant something, after wrestling a gruelling one hour war.

He was hardly channelling Hulk Hogan at WrestleMania VI.
