9. Sgt. Slaughter’s Pledge Of Allegiance
One
of the hottest rivalries of the 1980s was between Sgt. Slaughter and Iron
Sheik, a natural animosity stemming from the Iran hostage crisis just a few
years earlier. On 25 February 1984, Iron Sheik dismantled Eddie Gilbert on WWF
Championship Wrestling. As Sheik paraded around the ring, hocking loogies on
the fallen American, the crowd chanted “We Want Slaughter!”
Sarge
burst out and cleared the ring. Then he grabbed the microphone and declared war
on the Iron Sheik, followed up by a goosebump-inducing Pledge of Allegiance,
echoed by the passionate crowd.
