Off the back of a long losing streak, Dolph Ziggler's epic Intercontinental Title triumph over The Miz looked on the surface to be a satisfying end to his plight in the company as he'd fought to save his career, but the glory would be oddly short-lived.

Contesting the match of the night in an absorbing 20-minute thriller, the clash paid off an thoroughly well-built issue between the two that had stemmed from Miz' relentless cheating and constant abuse of Ziggler's failings since the two had been drafted to Smackdown Live! in the summer.

Such was the heat that there were calls for the match to go on last when WWE decided to air the Triple Threat WWE Title match on the show as the opener so not to have it clash with the live airing of a 2016 presidential debate.

Regardless, the result gave Dolph new hope, but that was rapidly dashed when he'd drop the belt back to Miz just over a month later on Smackdown's 900th episode special.

Miz was red hot and carried on as before, but it was a loss too far for Dolph. Slipping down the card, Dolph began his heel turn with the defeat, and similar midcard obscurity beckoned as it had done months earlier.
