Those of a religious persuasion were far from happy when The Undertaker strapped a helpless Steve Austin to his 'symbol' on the December 7, 1998 episode of Raw and proceeded to hoist him high into the air.

There's no getting away from the fact that this skit came across as a mock crucifixion, regardless of any company assertion from the WWF that Stone Cold wasn't strapped to a cross; the anti-hero babyface wasn't, but he was depicted in the same pose as Jesus Christ, and that's why religious groups were furious.

The USA Network received numerous complaints about the incident and must have found it hard to explain what the WWF were trying to achieve by effectively using crucifixion for the sake of building towards a pay-per-view match between both men.

Ironically though, people do remember the segment, and that likely justifies it to those who penned it; controversial or not, the fact such an act split opinion and is talked about today almost vindicates it in some minds.
