10 Most Prestigious Titles In American Wrestling Right Now
7. RoH World Championship
It's fair to say that the purchase of Ring of Honor has become a weight around Tony Khan's neck. The dedication to keeping the company alive is admirable, but it certainly has been to the detriment of AEW's weekly programming. One of the reasons for this is the fact that most of their championships have infiltrated the show.
In a company as young as AEW, every effort should be made to protect the prestige of their titles, and you need only look at the previous entry of the AEW TNT Championship to see how well that's been going. Yes, Tony Khan has a Ring of Honor Pay Per View to promote, but by having the RoH Television Champion beating the TNT Champion, it's not a great look.
With all that said, they have done a fair job of making the Ring of Honor World Championship seem relevant again. No offence to Jonathan Gresham, who is a superb wrestler in his own right, but there weren't many people calling for him to have an extended run with it. The switch to the previously white hot Claudio Castagnolli made sense, and immediately elevated the belt.
Weaving the whole 'code of honor' into the Jericho Appreciation Society versus Blackpool Combat Club narrative has at least breathed a little life into the dying feud, and Jericho holding the gold is a novelty we probably never thought we would see.
But it's becoming painfully clear that this belt needs its own show to truly thrive.
