Vince McMahon had high hopes for Mabel (didn’t we all?). He gave him the King of the Ring tournament victory, and wanted to make him the top heel in his company. Mabel, though, had a tendency to deliver really bad matches and hurt top stars, so that plan was scrapped and he was released in 1996.

Over in WCW, Eric Bischoff was signing anyone and everyone who had a little bit of name value in the WWF, and yet he had no plans for Mabel. It seemed the large man would ride out the rest of his wrestling days on the independent scene. But in July of 1998, he randomly showed up to battle Ken Shamrock on TV. It was a one-off appearance...until early the next year when he came back full-time. Mabel was dead, though, as he was kidnapped by The Ministry and turned into Viscera.

He had a decent mid-card role, but when The Ministry ran its course in 2000, he was soon gone...only to return again randomly in 2004! What appeared to be another one time appearance, saw him getting involved in the JBL/Undertaker feud, and then he somehow proceeded to stay employed for the next four years.

Had Mabel not passed away a couple of years ago, another random return or two likely would have happened.

As Rust Cohle from True Detective said "Life's barely long enough to get good at one thing. So be careful what you're good at." Sadly, I can't solve a murder like Rust...or change a tire, or even tie a tie. But I do know all the lyrics to Hulk Hogan's "Real American" theme song and can easily name every Natural Born Thriller from the dying days of WCW. I was once ranked 21st in the United States in Tetris...on the Playstation 3 version...for about a week. Follow along @AndrewSoucek and check out my podcast at wrestlingwithfriends.com
