10 Most Repeated WWE Storylines
3. Battles With Authority
A little conflict with your boss is perfectly normal. Pointing a gun and assaulting them in a hospital? Not so much.
Almost from the company's inception, WWE has relied on the persona of an on-screen authority figure to generate tension with rank and file wrestlers.
Although earlier executives like Jack Tunney and Gorilla Monsoon played the role more or less down the middle, the concept of the authority figure in WWE took off in the aftermath of the Montreal Screwjob.
Seizing on the indignation of Bret Hart fans, Vince McMahon embraced his more sinister nature, becoming a corrupt caricature of himself who sought to rule his company with an iron fist.
This set the stage for an epic feud with Stone Cold Steve Austin that became the template for a litany of future babyface vs. authority storylines in the years that followed. Whether CM Punk taking on John Laurinaitis or Daniel Bryan battling The Authority, WWE loves going back to the well on this one.
Despite almost constant repetition, what makes this storyline so compelling is the emotional satisfaction of watching an underdog overcome the odds. Who doesn't relate to the idea of management holding them back? Nobody wants to root for a millionaire. We'd rather see them eat a Stone Cold Stunner or GTS - every day for the rest of their lives. Take this job and shove it!
