5. Raven
Nowadays in wrestling, it's genuinely rare to be presented with a feud that goes back to childhood. That's exactly what happened in ECW between Raven and Tommy Dreamer. Fans were informed that both men had a long-standing grudge against one another, due to an incident that happened at Summer Camp. It was a unique scenario, there was nothing else like it at the time. Debuting in 1994, Raven was a sinister character that aped the popularity of Grunge Rock at the time. This was a remarkable shift for the man who had played the colourful manager and announcer Johnny Polo in the WWF. Raven was a depressed person who wanted nothing more than to get back at Dreamer for spurning his ex-girlfriend Beulah McGillicutty. Such an elaborate backstory wasn't common, even in ECW. The feud with Dreamer went on for years, even occasionally being referenced long after the main portion of it had finished. ECW is often palmed off as a promotion with little story-telling, but Raven's character proves that Paul Heyman had a penchant for weaving intricate tales.
