OK, OK, so we all love The Rock. Potentially the biggest and most bankable star The WWE ever had (certainly occupying the same ground as Hogan, Austin and Andre, in any instance), The Rock simply oozed cool. He was cocky, he was superhumanly charismatic and although his repertoire was largely limited to punches, kicks and the odd DDT, his in-ring timing was spot-on and his presence was genuinely electrifying. However, it is a true testimony to The Rocks ability to get over that The Peoples Elbow ever caught on. I mean, the dude main evented WrestleMania with that thing! Over and over again. ...For YEARS! He put legendary foes like Hulk Hogan and Stone Cold Steve Austin away with it and yet, for all its pomp and ceremony...Its still just a f*cking elbow drop. Yknow, the kind that Dolph Ziggler drops, like, ten of in a row and STILL loses? Yup. Just like that. So, The Rock stands over his fallen foe, smells the air, chucks his elbow pad into the crowd, does the funky chicken, hits the ropes, jumps over the opponent, off the ropes again and BOOM... ...An elbow drop. 1, 2, 3! DING DING DING! Thank you, ladies and gentlemen, and goodnight! WWE did a great DVD set of Rocks matches (well worth buying if youre an Attitude Era fan) and seriously, almost EVERY SINGLE ONE ends with that utterly ludicrous move. It is a testament to the man and his talent that this writer still marks out for it, every time he sees it. And so, in all likelihood, do you. So there you have it, probably the 10 most ridiculous finishing moves of all time. Wrestling can be really, really silly when you think about it, but thats why we love it, I guess.
I am a professional author and lifelong comic books/pro wrestling fan. I also work as a journalist as well as writing comic books (I also draw), screenplays, stage plays, songs and prose fiction.
I don't generally read or reply to comments here on What Culture (too many trolls!), but if you follow my Twitter (@heyquicksilver), I'll talk to you all day long!
If you are interested in reading more of my stuff, you can find it on http://quicksilverstories.weebly.com/ (my personal site, which has other wrestling/comics/pop culture stuff on it).
I also write for FLiCK http://www.flickonline.co.uk/flicktion, which is the best place to read my fiction work.
Oh yeah - I'm about to become a Dad for the first time, so if my stuff seems more sentimental than usual - blame it on that!
Finally, I sincerely appreciate every single read I get. So if you're reading this, thank you, you've made me feel like Shakespeare for a day! (see what I mean?)
Latcho Drom,
